• What is Marginalia?

Marginalia is a verb. It is something you do.

Our ethos is that a text does not need to be sacred and left untouched. Marginalia offers an open invitation to engage and reflect. It combines with your personal experience and views to create a unique understanding of the text through annotation. Marginalia is an action that encourages taking time with your reading; to raise, follow, answer and revisit any threads of interest to you while you read, and, most importantly, to enjoy the direction it takes you.

    Our goal is simple:
To offer beautiful, intentional tools that help you slow down, explore the text, and make literature undeniably your own.

  • Who is Marginalia for?

    Everyone!

Of the myriad ways that human beings can understand themselves and the world, reading and writing are building blocks of self-expression. We hold a firm belief that anyone can take part in marginalia as every perspective is unique; so we all have the capacity to produce something meaningful when interacting with a text. Our mission is to convince everyone that they can do so. One text - or even just a line - will have a way of dispersing a thousand different readings, simply because it can be understood in ways that are individual to each reader.

You don’t need to be labelled a book lover to take part, you just need to trust your thoughts and be willing to explore them as you go.

Who are the creators here?

Emma and Aidan are two Northern business owners and creatives at heart who bonded over discussing the ins and outs of our latest reads over a pint. We have watched the waves in reading trends over the last few years and have felt growing pressures of reading faster and reading harder - as if it is a race to sprint through a text to justify the purchase of the next. Reading to beat a reading goal and rack up those sweet literary points.

As Faber says in Fahrenheit 451:

"Our civilization is flinging itself to pieces. Stand back from the centrifuge."

We created this platform to push back against this centrifugal force and slow its pace by sharing the practice of Marginalia .We want to provide you with  the tools that allow you to take the space and time needed to imprint yourself on your reading.
